Federal Government Battery Rebate Program Fact Sheet
Program Overview
As part of their election campaign, the Australian Labor government has unveiled the 'Cheaper Home Batteries Program'—a landmark $2.3 billion initiative aimed at cutting the cost of home battery systems by around 30%-60% depending on the battery make. This program is designed to make solar energy storage more accessible and affordable for Australian households, small businesses, and community organisations.
Start Date
1 July 2025
Available Incentives
Battery Installation Incentive
-
Amount:
- Under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, eligible applicants will be able to access a federal rebate of up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity, depending on system size. For a typical 13.5 kWh battery, that equates to a rebate of around $5,000, significantly reducing the upfront cost of installation. Batteries must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP)-ready and must be installed alongside new or existing solar PV systems. The rebate applies to battery systems sized between 5 kWh and 50 kWh.
-
Eligibility:
-
Eligibility from Now Until July 1: Batteries installed before July 1, 2025, will be eligible (assuming Labor is re-elected), but cannot be switched on until July 1.
-
Battery Size Requirements: Subsidy applies to VPP-capable battery systems between 5 kWh and 50 kWh (usable capacity).
Systems up to 100 kWh can be installed, but the rebate will only apply to the first 50 kWh. -
VPP Capability: Batteries must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP)-capable, but actual participation is not mandatory.
-
Rebate Amount: Approximately $372 per kWh of usable battery capacity.
Final rebate may be slightly reduced due to admin fees and charges from Rebates traders. -
Decreasing Over Time: Similar to the national solar rebate (SRES), the battery subsidy will reduce gradually in future years.
-
Stackable with State Incentives: This federal rebate can be combined with existing state battery programs for even greater savings.
-
Existing Battery Owners Eligible: Homeowners with an existing battery can install an additional system and still claim the rebate. However homeowners can only claim the rebate once, not for future expansions; hence it worthwhile considering a larger battery with higher subsidies upfront.
-
Solar Requirement: The battery must be installed with a new or existing solar system.
Standalone batteries (without solar) are not eligible, as this would require a legislative change. -
Multiple Properties: Battery systems can be installed at each owned property, with each eligible for the rebate.
-
No Cap on Subsidies: The program is uncapped, meaning there’s no limit to how many rebates can be claimed nationwide.
-
No Impact on Power Prices: The government will purchase SRES certificates created under the scheme to avoid putting upward pressure on electricity prices.
