Short answer
Yes. Under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, solar systems up to 1 MW installed from 1 October 2026 can be eligible for small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Previously the limit was 100 kW. Additional requirements apply to mid-scale systems between 100 kW and 1 MW, which have a fixed five-year deeming period used to work out how many certificates they create.
What businesses should know (as at November 2026):
- Applies to systems installed from 1 October 2026.
- STCs are certificates, not a government payment. System owners can create STCs themselves or assign them to a registered agent in exchange for an upfront discount on the system price.
- Applications. As at early November 2026, the Clean Energy Regulator said STC applications for mid-scale systems would not open until mid to late November 2026.
- STCs or REGO. Owners of 100 kW to 1 MW systems can choose STCs or the Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO) scheme. The Clean Energy Regulator gives the example that choosing STCs means you can’t create REGO certificates for the deeming period.
