Short answer
Tesla Powerwall 3 is a home battery with a built-in solar inverter, storing 13.5 kWh of usable energy per unit. In Australia it has a 10-year defect warranty and is warranted to keep 70% of its capacity at 10 years, subject to Tesla’s conditions, including staying connected to the internet and being registered with Tesla.
Key specs (Tesla’s Australian datasheet):
- 13.5 kWh usable energy (14 kWh total) per unit
- a built-in solar inverter, so it works as one integrated solar and battery system
- backup power during outages needs Tesla’s Backup Gateway 2. Tesla shows both whole-home and partial-home backup set-ups, so your quote will say which one you’re getting.
Warranty (Tesla AU/NZ Powerwall warranty, September 2026):
- 10 years against defects from installation.
- 70% of capacity retained at 10 years, with unlimited cycles when used for solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup. For any other use, or a mix that includes one, the 70% cover is limited to 37.8 MWh of energy throughput.
- If the Powerwall isn’t connected to the internet for an extended time, or isn’t registered with Tesla, Tesla may not honour the full 10 years, but will always honour at least four years from installation.
SEA’s 10-year workmanship guarantee and 5-year Whole-of-System Warranty also apply, alongside your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
