Do I have to join a VPP to get the battery discount?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Not for the federal discount. To be eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, an on-grid battery must be capable of joining a virtual power plant, but you don’t have to join one. The exception is Western Australia, where the state battery rebate requires you to join a VPP.

  • Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program: the battery must be VPP-capable. Joining is your choice.
  • WA Residential Battery Scheme: joining a Synergy or Horizon Power VPP is mandatory.
  • NSW VPP incentive: an extra incentive available if you choose to join an eligible VPP. See Is there a NSW incentive for joining a VPP?

If you do join a VPP, you’ll need an ongoing internet connection, and the VPP provider may have its own conditions.
