What’s the difference between solar hot water and solar power?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Solar hot water uses the sun’s heat to warm water directly, usually with a gas or electric booster for days with less sun. Solar power (solar PV) turns sunlight into electricity for your home’s appliances. Heat pump hot water is a third option that heats water using heat drawn from the surrounding air.

  • Solar hot water: collectors on the roof absorb the sun’s heat to heat water stored in an insulated tank, usually with a gas or electric booster.
  • Solar PV: panels convert sunlight into electricity, and an inverter converts it into the type of electricity your home’s appliances use.
  • Heat pump hot water: moves heat from the surrounding air into the water, and according to energy.gov.au uses 30% of the energy of a conventional electric hot water system.

SEA installs solar PV and heat pump hot water systems. See What heat pump hot water systems does SEA install?
