Short answer
In most cases, yes. When you add a battery to an existing solar system, you can usually keep your current solar inverter and add a separate battery inverter. As at November 2026, a battery connected to an existing solar system can also be eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount.
Things to check first:
- One battery per property. Only one battery system per property can receive the federal discount, and only the first time a battery is installed, added to or replaced.
- Approved equipment. The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council’s approved list and installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited installer.
- Old feed-in tariffs. In Queensland, if you receive the 44 cent Solar Bonus Scheme tariff, you lose it if the battery runs at the same time as the tariff-earning system, unless the battery has a separate connection to the network. In South Australia, installing a battery ends the 44 cent distributor feed-in tariff (available only to systems connected before 30 September 2011). Talk to us before adding a battery.
