How much energy does a solar panel produce?

Table of Contents
Short answer

How much energy a solar panel produces depends on its capacity and on conditions where it’s installed. Panels produce the most on clear days when direct sunlight hits them. Roof direction, shading and heat all change output, so the same panel produces different amounts at different properties.

What affects output:

  • Sunlight. Panels produce most on clear days, and usually still produce some power on cloudy days.
  • Roof direction. North-facing panels usually produce the most. East-facing panels produce more in the morning and west-facing panels more in the afternoon.
  • Shading. Trees, buildings and other obstructions reduce output, especially if panels are shaded for long periods.
  • Heat. In bright sun, panels typically run much hotter than the air around them, which reduces their peak output.

For SEA-installed systems, our Whole-of-System Warranty covers output that falls more than 10% below the system’s performance estimates during the first five years (the 10% is a weather allowance), subject to its conditions and exclusions. Older installations may have different terms. See What if my system produces less than its performance estimate?
