Can I sell the electricity my solar system generates?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Yes. Many electricity plans pay a feed-in tariff, a credit on your bill for solar power you send to the grid. For new solar customers, feed-in tariffs are now much lower than the price you pay for electricity from the grid.

  • Retailers set the rate. Feed-in tariffs are part of your electricity plan. As at November 2026, Victoria no longer has a government-set minimum.
  • Compare plans. Use Energy Made Easy in NSW, the ACT, South East Queensland and South Australia, or Victorian Energy Compare in Victoria. The plan with the highest feed-in tariff isn’t always the cheapest overall.
  • Regional Queensland customers may access a regional feed-in tariff set by the Queensland Competition Authority.
  • Virtual power plants offer another way to earn from a battery. See What is a virtual power plant?
