Short answer
A battery stores the excess power your solar system makes so you can use it when the sun isn’t shining, such as in the evening, rather than exporting it to the grid. If it’s set up for backup, a battery can also supply power during an outage, and joining a virtual power plant (VPP) can earn you financial benefits.
Reasons people add a battery:
- Use more of your own solar. Store daytime power for when the sun isn’t shining, and rely less on electricity bought from your retailer.
- Backup power. Only if the battery is configured for it. See Will a battery keep my power on in a blackout?
- Virtual power plants. Receive financial benefits in return for letting a VPP operator control your battery some or all of the time. See What is a VPP?
- Lower upfront cost. As at November 2026, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has a design target of around 30% off the upfront cost of eligible batteries. The actual discount depends on battery size, the certificate price and fees. See How does it work?
Whether a battery suits you depends on your electricity use and your solar system. We’ll help you work it out.
