Can solar and batteries reduce my electricity bill to zero?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Solar and batteries can bring some electricity bills close to zero, but it isn’t guaranteed. The feed-in tariff for exported solar is much lower than the price of electricity you buy, so your system needs to cover most of your own use, day and night, to get close to a zero bill.

What makes the biggest difference:

  • Using your solar power yourself, rather than exporting it.
  • A battery to store excess solar for the evening and overnight.
  • Your electricity plan, including its feed-in tariff. The plan with the highest feed-in tariff isn’t necessarily the best.

Off-grid systems have no grid connection, but they need a large battery and control system, often with a backup generator, and cost much more upfront. They’re usually only worth considering where a grid connection is unavailable, unreliable or very expensive. See Can I go completely off-grid?
