Is commercial solar worth the investment?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Whether commercial solar is worth the investment depends on your business. Your energy use, especially during daylight hours, your roof space, your electricity tariffs and the incentives you’re eligible for all affect the return. Recent changes have extended incentives to larger commercial systems, and a site-specific assessment shows what to expect.

What’s changed recently (as at November 2026):

  • Bigger systems can now earn STCs (federal). Solar systems up to 1 MW installed from 1 October 2026 can be eligible for small-scale technology certificates. See Can businesses claim STCs on larger systems?
  • Victorian Energy Upgrades (VIC) includes an activity for commercial solar systems of 30 kW to 200 kW at non-residential premises. See VEU for businesses
  • NSW business battery incentives (NSW) under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme apply to installations with an implementation date on or after 7 September 2026. See NSW business battery incentives

These incentives are certificate-based discounts, not government cash payments.

What we look at in a commercial assessment:

  • when your business uses power, and how much
  • roof space, shading, access and your switchboard
  • your electricity tariffs
  • network approvals and connection requirements
  • whether a battery or EV charging should be part of the system.
