Is the federal battery discount reducing over time?

Table of Contents
Short answer

As at November 2026, yes. Since 1 May 2026, the number of certificates a battery earns under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program steps down every six months on a published schedule. The support also tapers by battery size, so larger batteries earn less support for each extra kilowatt hour.

The schedule. The program uses an “STC factor” to work out how many certificates a battery creates. It’s 6.8 for batteries installed from May to December 2026, and is scheduled to fall to 5.7 from January 2027, then keep stepping down twice a year until 2030. The program is reviewed at least once a year, so future steps can change. The factor that applies is the one in force on the date the battery is installed, not the date you sign a quote.

The size taper. Full support applies to the first 14 kWh of capacity, 60% to capacity between 14 and 28 kWh, and 15% to capacity between 28 and 50 kWh.

What it means for you. The dollar value also depends on the certificate market price and any agent fees, so it isn’t a fixed amount. The right battery is the one sized to your home, not the biggest one. SEA shows the discount for your system in your quote.
