Short answer
Yes, you can store the energy your solar system generates by adding a home battery. Without a battery, solar power you don’t use straight away is usually exported to the grid. A battery stores that excess so you can use it later, when the sun isn’t shining.
A few things to know:
- Typical sizes. According to energy.gov.au, household batteries typically hold 4 kWh to 14 kWh, and some systems are larger.
- Usable capacity matters. A battery can’t be fully discharged, so its usable capacity is slightly less than its total.
- Size it to your use. A battery too big for your solar or inverter can limit its benefits. See What size battery do I need?
- Choose your battery. SEA installs batteries from Tesla, Sigenergy and ESY Sunhome. See Which batteries does SEA install?
