Short answer
Yes, you can charge an electric vehicle with solar, with the right equipment. Some EV chargers can charge your car using only excess solar, but how it works depends on the brand. Tesla’s Charge on Solar needs a Powerwall and a Tesla vehicle, and SolarEdge’s excess-solar charging needs a compatible SolarEdge inverter and meter.
- Tesla: Charge on Solar lets a Tesla vehicle charge from excess solar. It only works with a Powerwall, only charges Tesla vehicles, needs a solar system without export limits or site limits, and may wait until there’s at least 1.2 kW of steady excess solar.
- SolarEdge: the Home EV Charger supports excess-solar charging with a compatible SolarEdge inverter, a SolarEdge import/export meter and communication between the charger and inverter.
- Sigenergy: ask us how solar charging works with SigenStor.
