What battery incentives are available for NSW businesses?

Table of Contents
Short answer

As at November 2026, NSW offers two battery incentives for businesses under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme: BESS4 for small and medium businesses installing batteries over 20 kWh up to 200 kWh, and BESS5 for commercial and industrial batteries over 200 kWh. Both apply to installations with an implementation date on or after 7 September 2026.

BESS4: small and medium businesses

  • usable capacity over 20 kWh and up to 200 kWh
  • the business must pay at least $5,000 (excluding GST) for each installation
  • once per site
  • can be combined with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program for batteries under 100 kWh.

BESS5: commercial and industrial

  • usable capacity over 200 kWh and up to 30,000 kWh, with the incentive calculated on up to 10,000 kWh and limited by inverter size
  • the equipment must be tested to the UL9540A standard, connect to the internet and be able to be controlled by a demand response aggregator.

Neither applies to residential buildings or data centres, and a site can’t claim both. The incentive is a discount through an accredited certificate provider. SEA’s commercial team can assess your site.
