Short answer
Heat reduces solar panel output. ARENA-funded research by UNSW found that in bright sunshine, panels typically run about 30°C hotter than the surrounding air, and roof-mounted panels a further 10 to 15°C hotter. That heat can reduce peak output by 15 to 20% below rated performance and speeds up wear.
- Panels: the extra heat reduces peak output and speeds up the ageing of the panel.
- Inverters: the federal Solar Consumer Guide recommends installing inverters close to the switchboard and, where possible, on a shaded wall, because extreme heat shortens their life.
These are typical figures from research, not a prediction for your system. Our site and technical assessment looks at where your panels and inverter will go.
