Short answer
Before a solar system can connect to the grid, you need a connection agreement with your local electricity network, known as the distribution network service provider. The agreement includes any limits on your inverter size and how much power you can export. SEA arranges this approval for you as part of your installation.
What to know:
- You can’t choose your network. It depends on where you live.
- Timing varies. Approval times differ between networks and areas, so we don’t promise a set timeframe. We’ll keep you updated.
- Export limits. In most areas, the network limits how much solar you can send to the grid. Some networks use dynamic limits that only restrict exports when the grid is under pressure. In South Australia, new solar inverter installations must meet dynamic export requirements.
- Smart meter. You’ll need a smart meter for solar. In most states and territories your electricity retailer installs it for free, though there may be a charge if your switchboard needs upgrading. In Victoria most homes already have one, but it needs to be set up for solar. See What happens after my system is installed?
