Short answer
You don’t always need a battery to charge your EV from solar. Some chargers can use excess solar during the day without one, such as the SolarEdge Home EV Charger with a compatible SolarEdge inverter and meter. Tesla’s Charge on Solar does need a Powerwall. A battery also lets you store daytime solar to charge your car later.
- Charging during the day: chargers with excess-solar charging, such as the SolarEdge Home EV Charger with a compatible SolarEdge inverter and import/export meter, can use surplus solar without a battery.
- Tesla: Charge on Solar requires a Powerwall and a Tesla vehicle.
- Charging at night: a home battery can store daytime solar for use when the sun isn’t shining.
SEA can design a solar, battery and EV charger system that fits when you drive and charge.
