Short answer
“Battery ready” can mean different things, so ask what it means for the solar system you’re quoted. If you’re installing solar and a battery together, a hybrid inverter can run both. If you add a battery later, you can usually keep your solar inverter and add a separate battery inverter.
- Hybrid inverter: combines a solar inverter and a battery inverter in one unit, and may suit you if you’re installing solar and a battery at the same time. It can’t be used with microinverters or with batteries that have their own built-in inverter, so the battery choice matters.
- Adding a battery later: you can usually keep your existing solar inverter and add a battery inverter alongside it.
As at November 2026, to get the federal battery discount an on-grid battery must be technically capable of joining a virtual power plant (you don’t have to join one), so it’s worth choosing compatible equipment from the start.
