Short answer
A string inverter is a single wall-mounted unit that converts power from all your panels, and is typically the cheapest option. Microinverters sit on each panel so panels work independently. A hybrid inverter combines a solar inverter and a battery inverter in one unit, which can suit installing solar and a battery together.
- String inverter: the most common set-up for homes. Typically the lowest cost.
- Microinverters or optimisers: let each panel work independently, which may suit roofs with panels facing different directions or with some shading. Microinverter systems are typically more expensive.
- Hybrid inverter: one unit for both solar and battery (a “DC-coupled” system). It can’t be used with microinverters or with batteries that have their own built-in inverter.
- Adding a battery later: you can usually keep your existing solar inverter and add a separate battery inverter (an “AC-coupled” system).
SEA recommends a set-up to suit your roof and your plans for a battery.
