What battery incentives are available in NSW?

Table of Contents
Short answer

As at November 2026, NSW households buying a new battery use the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount. The previous NSW battery installation discount is no longer available to home and business owners. NSW does offer a separate incentive for connecting a battery to a virtual power plant, which can be combined with the federal discount.

What’s available for NSW homes:

  • Federal battery discount. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program. See How does the Cheaper Home Batteries Program work?
  • NSW VPP incentive. Under the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, an incentive is available when an eligible battery is signed up with a virtual power plant provider for at least 12 months. See Is there a NSW incentive for joining a VPP?
  • Home Energy Saver. A NSW Government program offering zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 for eligible owners. Discounts for eligible lower-income households are listed as coming soon and aren’t open yet. A loan for a solar or battery system can be combined with the federal discount (complete systems only), but not with NSW Government Energy Security Safeguard incentives. The NSW VPP incentive sits under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, which is part of the Energy Security Safeguard, so a Home Energy Saver loan used for a battery can’t be combined with it. See What is the NSW Home Energy Saver program?

The NSW VPP incentive reaches you through an accredited certificate provider or your VPP provider as a discount or payment, and Home Energy Saver is a loan, so neither is a cash payment from the government. SEA checks what you’re eligible for and includes it in your proposal.
