Will my insurance cover my solar system?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Home insurance can cover a solar system, but you need to check your policy. Damage from storms, lightning and other weather or natural events isn’t covered by SEA’s warranties, so we strongly recommend making sure your solar panels and battery are covered under your home building insurance policy.

After your system is installed:

  1. Talk to your insurer early. Let them know you’ve added solar panels and a battery, and ask whether your building policy covers them.
  2. Check the sum insured. The federal Solar Consumer Guide notes that changes to your policy may increase premiums or need a higher building sum insured.

Insurance and warranties do different jobs. SEA’s warranties cover faults in the products we supplied and in our installation. Weather and natural events are excluded, which is why insurance matters. If you rent, own a strata property or own a business, insurance requirements can differ, so check with your insurer or body corporate manager.
