Are there hidden costs with solar?

Table of Contents
Short answer

Solar shouldn’t come with surprises in your quote, but there are a few costs worth asking about up front: switchboard upgrades, smart meter charges, roof repairs, occasional servicing, and replacing the inverter during the life of the system. A clear solar quote spells out what’s included and what isn’t.

  • Switchboard upgrades. Some homes need switchboard work before solar can be connected. We check your switchboard at the site assessment.
  • Smart meter. You’ll need one for solar. In most states and territories the electricity retailer installs it for free, but there may be a charge if switchboard upgrades are needed. In Victoria, most homes already have a smart meter, but it still needs to be set up for solar.
  • Roof repairs. If your roof is likely to need repair or replacement in the next few years, it’s best done before panels go on.
  • Servicing. The federal Solar Consumer Guide suggests you could have your system serviced every two years by an accredited solar installer or qualified electrician.
  • Inverter replacement. For most systems, the inverter will need replacing before the panels.
  • Fees. For the federal battery discount, any administration fees and the discount should be clearly shown against the price.
