What is the WA Residential Battery Scheme?

Table of Contents
Short answer

The WA Residential Battery Scheme is a Western Australian Government rebate for home batteries. As at November 2026, it pays $130 per kWh of usable capacity for Synergy customers, up to $1,300, or $380 per kWh for Horizon Power customers, up to $3,800. Joining a virtual power plant is mandatory.

Main conditions:

  • the battery has at least 5 kWh usable capacity, and the rebate is calculated on up to 10 kWh
  • you join a virtual power plant offered by Synergy or Horizon Power and keep an ongoing internet connection
  • the battery is on your retailer’s Supported Solution List and the Clean Energy Council’s approved list
  • one battery per property
  • renters can take part with the landlord’s written consent.

The scheme is available until the planned 100,000 rebates have been distributed. As at December 2025 it was expected to run until 2027, so check availability before you buy.

Unlike the federal program, the WA scheme requires VPP participation.
